Anniina Lehtinen is musical multi-talented artist

Anniina has her master's degree in interpretation from Haute École de Musique de Lausanne.

Anniina Lehtinen is a Finnish pianist, composer, musician and sound artist. She earned her master’s degree in interpretation (main subject piano) from Haute École de Musique in Lausanne Switzerland. Profoundness of expression and intuitiveness are at the core of her artistic practice. She writes and performs a wide range of music for piano and several other ensembles, often adding field recordings, electroacoustic elements and her own voice to her music. Anniina has played recitals and chamber music and performed as a soloist with orchestras in both Finland and abroad.

Her extensive musical style ranges fluently between classical, film music, ambient and art pop. The classical background has built a strong ground for exploring different musical genres, for making multidisciplinary collaborations and for breaking conventional norms of music making. She currently works with projects called Water Rituals, Fleeting Symphony and produces art pop under the alias Introverted Volcano. Anniina regularly works in artist residencies across the world.

“I appreciate artists who have the ability, willingness and sensitivity to go deep within and create from there. The most important thing for me is to be vulnerable and create from the heart.”

A journey inspired by melodies

"I fell in love with music, especially the piano, as a child. We always had a piano at home. My father started giving piano lessons to me and my brother when I was about 6 years old. Soon I was able to have "real" piano lessons. I would get frustrated if the teacher didn't give me enough homework and I would sneak pieces in and play along. I was singing songs during piano lessons even before I knew how to write music. I marked the piano keys I used in my compositions with white masking tape, but to my annoyance I found that the rhythm of the piece was forgotten in this music-making process and I could not remember later how it went.

When I had friends over, I often included the piano in our games. My mother said even then that if I was in a bad mood, I would usually go to the piano to relieve it. When I started studying music, I forgot about composing. After graduating with a Master's degree, I longed for a break from the world of classical music. After a six-month break, however, I found a new enthusiasm for music as I gradually began to improvise and compose my own music.

For me, music is a means of expressing emotions and moods. When I hear a melody I get a strong feeling of how it should continue. I love to create moods and express my feelings through music."
